Early 20th Century poet and novelist, Maxwell Bodenheim, once said: "Poetry is the impish attempt to paint the color of the wind." Perhaps the inverse is also true in that attempting to capture the world around us by means of paint or chalk or ink onto paper or canvas is to catch a glimpse of the poetry that exists in all things.
I was once asked if artists see the world differently than others, and although we all have the ability to see the beauty and poetry of life, perhaps artists do in fact see the world from a slightly different vantage point.
Andrew Wyeth, arguably one of the best-known American painters of recent times, perhaps said it best when he remarked: "I dream a lot. I do more painting when I'm not painting. It's in the subconscious." I've certainly found that to be true! I see myriad painting possibilities in practically everything! The trick is to actually capture something - to lasso it and wrestle it to the ground so to speak - much like a cowboy ropes a calf for branding. To complete a painting with any degree of satisfaction brings order to the artist's world, if even only for a fleeting moment.
That is why I paint.
